Paying extra for a fancy hotel often gives you a lot of perks like better a location, a bigger space or more amenities, but what about cleanliness?

A new report from Travel Math, says many areas in 5-star hotel rooms contain more germs than equivalent three and four star spaces.

The trip calculator site teamed up with EmLab P&K to examine swabs taken from the remote, bathroom counter, desk, and phone at nine different hotels.

While the germiest spots changed depending on the star rating of the hotels, the lab results showed that the bathroom counter and remote control were by far the most germ-covered surfaces in all nine hotel rooms.

The germs ranged from Bacillus spp, which is linked to various infections, to cocci, which is linked to skin infections. Of course, the healthier you are, the better chance your body has to fight off these types of bacteria.

And you can help fight the bad bacteria before it even begins to affect your body by disinfecting areas like doorknobs, counters, faucets, light switches, remotes and telephones as soon as you arrive.

Check out the infographic below for a closer look at the bacteria distribution in your hotel room.
